Who Pays for Sports at Miramonte?

 Short answer: You do.

The High School District believes that sports should be largely self-supporting. Funding comes from three buckets: the district (AUHSD), the school (sport participation contribution), and from the Boosters Club (membership donations). This explains why you will be asked to pay at least two times: one “contribution” for the school bucket and one “membership donation” for the Booster’s bucket.  On top of that, most teams ask for incremental costs during the course of a season specific to that sport or activity, such as an added tournament fee.  So, who pays for what?

I. High School District Funding

AUHSD pays for basic needs such as coaches' stipends, referees, insurance, fingerprinting, certification, utilities, field lighting, field maintenance, pool and gym preparation, and safety equipment, such as softball and football helmets. All other expenses related to sports must be covered by “sport participation contributions” (these are not called “fees” because they cannot be required) and Boosters Club.

 II. Sport Participation Contribution

(Paid when student is enrolled in a sport; amount varies based on the sport and number of players)

For those of you who have older children who played sports at Miramonte, this was previously referred to as the “spirit fee.” This contribution covers: Uniforms, meals before/after games, end of season celebration, tournaments and post-season travel (Note: Boosters often subsidizes travel when it can, if funds are available and costs are manageable).

III. Boosters Club Membership

(A donation paid during school registration)

Covers: Sports Trainer (John Grigsby), a weight room supervisor, sports medicine supplies, team equipment, including balls, nets and training aides. It also covers capital expenditures such as cheer and wrestling mats, scoreboards, field preparations tractors, pole vault pits, soccer goals, spectator benches and much more.  The Boosters Club fills in gaps where the other two buckets of funding fall short.

Why Should You Join the

Miramonte Boosters Club

And Support the Annual Fundraiser?

Because without the Miramonte Boosters Club, sports programs would be underfunded. It’s that simple.

For the 2015-16 school year Miramonte Boosters Club has committed over $60,000 in support!

In fact, the club should change its name to the Miramonte Sports Funding Organization. Seriously, “Boosters” implies supplemental, extra or non-essential. Yet in reality, the Boosters club is a de facto sports and activities funding organization. The Boosters Club provides funding to every sport at Miramonte - without that funding, the school would not be able to offer multiple athletic options.  Boosters funding is critical to every sport at Miramonte. District funding and Sports Participation contributions (formerly called “spirit fees”) do not cover the total costs to run these sports. In fact, they don’t even come close. It is a common misconception.  Boosters’ funding is akin to what EFO is to the schools’ operating budgets.

That said, the majority of the Boosters’ budget comes from membership fees. Yet, the startling truth is that only about 50% of families with athletes are members of Miramonte Boosters. We hope that this is mostly a result of misunderstanding and poor communication on our part. Our goal is 100% participation of all families with student athletes at Miramonte and we have several donation levels which allow flexibility in giving:

Our Annual Fundraiser is an important source of income to the Club in addition to your membership.  Your contributions add much needed support to the Club and the Miramonte Athletic community.
